From Latin harpyia, ultimately from Ancient Greek Ἅρπυια (Hárpuia, literally snatcher), from ἁρπάζω (harpázō, I snatch, seize). Compare Polish harpia, Russian га́рпия (gárpija), Italian arpia, Spanish arpía, French harpie, German Harpyie.
