harmider
Appearance
Polish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Possibly borrowed from Ottoman Turkish حرامی + دره (“ravine of the highwayman”), a site of frequent ambushes for Polish envoys heading to Constantinople. Sławski proposes a derivation from Persian [script needed] (γarmīdan, “to quarrel”), rejected by most scholars.
