Finnish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

hämärä +‎ sokeus

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈhæmæræˌsokeus/, [ˈhæmæræˌs̠o̞k̟e̞us̠]
  • Rhymes: -okeus
  • Hyphenation(key): hä‧märä‧soke‧us

Noun

[edit]

hämäräsokeus

  1. night blindness, nyctalopia (inability to see in faint light)

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Formerly night blindness has been called in Finnish also hemeralopia, which in English means day blindness. Reason for this confusion is that in Germany and France the terms "hemeralopie" (night blindness) and "nyctalopie" (day blindness) are used in the opposite sense to the English usage.
