Finnish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]hämäränäkö (“night vision”) + laite (“device”)
Pronunciation
[edit]- IPA(key): /ˈhæmæræˌnækøˌlɑi̯teˣ/, [ˈhæmæræˌnæk̟ø̞ˌlɑ̝i̯t̪e̞(ʔ)]
- Rhymes: -ɑite
- Syllabification(key): hä‧mä‧rä‧nä‧kö‧lai‧te
Noun
[edit]hämäränäkölaite
- night vision device (appliance which strengthens ambient light so that one may see in very faint light)
Usage notes
[edit]Technically, hämäränäkölaite is based on magnifying the intensity of available ambient light, and thus it does not allow vision in complete darkness. With other technologies such as infrared imaging it is possible to "see" even in absence of any visible light. These devices are called pimeänäkölaite in Finnish.
