[edit]From Proto-Brythonic *gwɨðbuɨll, from Proto-Celtic *widukʷēslā (literally “wood intelligence”). By surface analysis, gwydh (“trees”) + poll (“intelligence, reason”). Compare Breton gwezboell, Welsh gwyddbwyll and also Irish ficheall, Scottish Gaelic fidhcheall, Manx feeal.
