From Middle Welsh gwasgawd, gwasgaut, from Proto-Brythonic *gwoskọd, from Proto-Celtic *uɸo-skātu. Cognate with Irish foscadh (shelter; shade). By surface analysis, go-, gwo-, gwa- (under) +‎ ysgod (shade).
