Etymology

[edit]

According to Smoczynski, an adjectival derivative of gùsti (to practice, get used to), of unclear origin.[1] Cognate with Latvian gudrs.

Other theories linking the word to the root of gauti (to acquire, get), or to Hittite [script needed] (kutru(wa), witness), are subject to debate.[2]
