Of Germanic origin, (compare Spanish guadañar (to mow)), probably from Old Frankish *waiþanjan (to pasture, forage), from Proto-Germanic *waiþō (hunt, pasture, food), or derived from guadañar. Cognate with Old High German weidanōn (to hunt, forage for food) and Sicilian vadagna. More at gain.
