Uncertain; possibly a substratum word, akin to Albanian grihë, or derived from Albanian gërresë (potter's instrument for leveling). Alternatively, from a Slavic *kresь or *gresь; compare Serbo-Croatian kresalo, kresivo (flint, tinderbox), kresati (light with flint), kresiti (set off sparks).[1]
