[edit]From Middle High German grübelen, from Old High German grubilōn (“to dig (repeatedly)”), from graban (“to dig”) + -lōn (frequentative suffix), equivalent to graaban + -alan. Cognate with German grübeln (“to brood, ponder”), also English grub (“to scrounge, scavenge”).
