gräisslech

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Luxembourgish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

The Luxembourgish form requires a Middle High German -ī- or -iu-, hence probably from Middle High German griuslich (horrible), alongside grūslich, from grūsen; cognate with German grauslich, gräuslich. Alternatively from *grīslich, equivalent to Middle Dutch grîselijk, whence modern Dutch griezelig (with a dialectal monophthong), of uncertain origin. These two stems might be related to, but are distinct from, German grässlich (from Middle Low German grēselîk), English grisly, both with an originally short vowel.
