[edit]From one or more of the languages of New Guinea.[1] The oldest use in the scientific literature, as a French word, may be a plate caption "La Goura de la nouvelle Guinée" in Pierre Sonnerat's Voyage a la Nouvelle Guinée. The spelling Goüra also appears in the 19th century.
