Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from French gorille, from New Latin gorilla, from Ancient Greek Γόριλλαι (Górillai, “a tribe of hairy women”), described by Hanno the Navigator, a Carthaginian navigator and possible visitor to the area that later became Sierra Leone.
