Etymology

From New Latin gonas, a coinage based on Ancient Greek γονή (gonḗ, seed, childbirth, offspring), from γίγνομαι (gígnomai, to come into being, to be born). Compare French and Italian gonade, German Gonade, Polish gonada, Russian гонада (gonada), Portuguese and Spanish gónada, Yiddish גאָנאַד (gonad).
