Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Univerbation of God + verdomme. Literally, “God dammit, may God damn”. The -me is not the pronoun me, but represents the dated subjunctive suffix -e (preceded by a second -m- to mark the penultimate syllable as closed and the pronunciation of its vowel as short).
Pronunciation

Usage notes
[edit]- Offensive to devout Christians, for uttering God's name in vain.
- A very common imprecation with an elaborate variety of minced variants (such as gedverdemme) and intensified, dysphemistic derivations (such as godverdetyfus).
