From Danish gøre, gjøre (18th century spelling), from Old Danish gøræ, gørwa, gærwa, from Proto-Germanic *garwijaną.

Usage notes

Until July 1st 2005, the alternative infinitive gjøra was also allowed. The form is used in certain dialects especially in Eastern Norway.
