[edit]Perhaps from an unrecorded Middle English *gost-kyng, (compare Middle English hevonking (“king of heaven”), folc-king (“king of the people”), etc.); or directly from Old English gāstcyning (“soul’s king, God”), equivalent to ghost + king.
