[edit]Probably from the feminine variant form ghioacă, from Vulgar Latin root *cloca, following metathesis and syncopation of Latin cochlea, or possibly related to găoace (“snail, egg, or nut shell”), from *gău (from Latin cavum) + suffix -oc.
