Swahili

Etymology

[edit]

Plausibly from Arabic جافِي (jāfī, “harsh, rough, coarse”, chiefly of behaviour, but also of things). This is pronounced /ˈɡaːfi/ in most of Omani and parts of Yemeni Arabic. The Swahili gh would have to be a hyperforeignism.
