Etymology

From geo- +‎ fiction. Ostensibly coined by future members of the Dutch Geofiction Association (founded 1984).

1. The conception and creation of a fictional cartographic design that is the setting of a work of fiction or of one's imagination; worldbuilding.

     It may, however, be regarded as typical that this is often the type of story in which undue attention is paid to the description of the 'ficticious' ^[sic] geographical environment (a striking example being the geofiction of The Lord of the Rings).
