[edit]Uncertain. Possibly of Celtic origin, from Celtiberian *cárcia, from Proto-Celtic *korksā, akin to Welsh crychydd and Breton kerc'heiz, and ultimately onomatopoeic in nature.
Compare Occitan agaça, gacha, Italian gazza, and French agace.
