From Old Galician-Portuguese galĩeiro, from Latin gallīnārium (henhouse), from gallīna (hen). Cognate with Galician galiñeiro, Spanish gallinero, Catalan galliner and Italian gallinaio. By surface analysis, from galinha +‎ -eiro.
