[edit]Borrowed from South Slavic, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *galъ; compare Serbo-Croatian gȁo (“black, dark”), Bulgarian гал (gal, “jackdaw”).[1][2] While the meaning ‘black sheep’ is attested in Serbo-Croatian гаља (galja), the meaning ‘jackdaw’ is only attested in East Slavic: Russian галя (galja).[3]
