[edit]From dialectal gabë + -onjë (feminine), related to shkabë, with the same stem but different prefix. The source is Proto-Albanian *gabā, from Proto-Indo-European *kobuǵos (compare English hawk, Latin capys (“bird of prey”), Russian ко́бчик (kóbčik, “red-footed falcon”)).[1]
