Etymology

Disputed:

  1. according to Orel, a dialectal word from Mirdita previously misinterpreted in meaning; it would have originally meant 'study, office room'. From Byzantine Greek γραφεῖον (grapheîon) (whence Modern Greek γραφείο (grafeío)),[1]
  2. according to Çabej, from the prefix gër- +‎ fej (plural of fyell).[2]
  3. according to Topalli, from fyell (hollow).[3]
