[edit]Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic *глътъ (*glŭtŭ) (hence Bulgarian гълтам (gǎltam, “to swallow”)), from Proto-Slavic *gъltъ, related to *glъtati (“to swallow, devour”). Compare also gât.
