[edit]Etymology
[edit]13th century. Already attested in local Medieval Latin as gandara and gandera; from a pre-Roman substrate of Iberia. While some authors have proposed an Iberian origin,[1] this is unlikely, since Iberian was spoken in the Mediterranean coast, and this word is documented mostly in the NW of the Iberian peninsula; related to Alemannic German Gand (“scree”).[2][3][4]
