In the sense "the past," forðġewitennes was used without the word "the," just like andweardnes (the present) and tōweardnes (the future): Forðġewitennes ne biþ nǣfre dēad: ne biþ hēo furðum forðġewiten (“The past is never dead: it isn't even past”).
