From the verb forða (to rescue) + -st (a suffix which turns verbs into middle voice verbs). See also the appendix about the Icelandic middle voice verbs.

  1. (with accusative) to avoid something, to fight shy of something, to steer clear of something, to shun something
    Fjárfestar reyna að forðast að fjárfesta í íslenskum fyrirtækjum.
    Investors try to steer clear of investing in Icelandic companies.
    Ég reyni að forðast að horfa í augun á fólki.
    I try to avoid looking people in the eyes.
    Hann forðast mig.
    He's avoiding me.'
