[edit]From Old Norse fleygr, from Proto-Germanic *flaugijaz, variant of *flugjaz. Compare Old English *flycge, attested in unflycge (“flightless”) (English fledge (“able to fly”)), Middle Low German vlugge, Old High German flucki (Middle High German vlücke).
