Etymology
[edit]Eventually from Latin fascia. Regarding the preserved velar/uvular, the form cannot have passed through Sicilian fascia, whence indeed Maltese faxxa. Hence probably inherited from older Arabic فَصْقِيّة (faṣqiyya, “a kind of cloth or bandage”, whence also Spanish falquía (“halter”)), from Ancient Greek φασκία (phaskía). Alternatively directly from the Greek.
