[edit]Literally, “something with four legs”. Compare dialectal Swedish fyrfot (“lizard”), and also Danish firben. Attested as fiirfisler (probably in plural) by Jacob Nicolai Wilse in 1780 in his dictionary of Spydeberg dialect.
