- A natural fiber, similar to hemp, obtained from the leaves of the plant Furcraea andina and certain other plants of the genus Furcraea.

- 2004, Gabriel García Márquez, Memoria de mis putas tristes:
- A las once fui a mis trámites de rutina en el baño, donde estaba su ropa de pobre doblada sobre una silla con un esmero de rica: un traje de etamina con mariposas estampadas, un calzón amarillo de malapodán[sic] y unas sandalias de fique.
