From Old Norse fauskr. Cognate with Elfdalian fuosk and Norwegian fausk.

fauskur m (genitive singular fausks, nominative plural fauskar)

  1. Rotted or fragile piece of wood (often a plank).
    Þegar hún steig á hann, brast fauskurinn undir hana.
    When she stepped on it, the fragile plank snapped under her.
  2. (derogatory) Elder; a person of older age in a specified group.
    Synonyms: gamalmenni, gamlingi, öldungur
    Við gátum ekki hlustað á þennan fausk því hann talaði of lágt.
    We couldn't listen to that geezer because he talked to quietly.
