  1. (phonetics) To simultaneously contract the palatoglossus and palatopharyngeus muscles, which have the effects of: vertically expanding and laterally constricting the pharyngeal cavity, of constricting the oropharyngeal isthmus, and of raising the pharynx relative to the larynx.
