[edit]From Old Irish fodb. Possible cognate with Ancient Greek ὠθέω (ōthéō, “push”). MacBain also suggests a possible connection with Ancient Greek ἄεθλον (áethlon, “war prize”) and English wager, but these are generally considered to be from different roots in current literature.
