Etymology

From Latin faldistōrium, faldestōrium, from Old High German faldstuol, faldan, faltan (to fold) (German falten) + stuol (stool), so called because it could be folded or laid together. See fold and stool. Doublet of faldstool, fauteuil, and foldstool.
