försträcka

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Swedish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

för- +‎ sträcka. Compare Norwegian forstrekke and German vorstrecken.

Verb

[edit]

försträcka (present försträcker, preterite försträckte, supine försträckt, imperative försträck)

  1. (law) loan (of fungible goods)

Usage notes

[edit]

Historically, the verb låna was reserved for loans of a specific thing (equivalent to commodatum in Roman law). The word försträcka was instead used to describe loans of fungible assets (equivalent to mutuum in Roman law). While the distinction between the two is sometimes maintained, it is nevertheless commonplace today to use the word låna to describe both types of loans, even in legal texts.
