Etymology

[edit]

för- +‎ frysa (to freeze)

Verb

[edit]

förfrysa (present förfryser, preterite förfrös, supine förfrusit, imperative förfrys)

  1. (intransitive) to suffer frostbite
Du bör ha tjocka kläder så att du inte förfryser.
You should bring thick clothing so that you won't suffer frostbite.
  2. (transitive) to cause to suffer frostbite, usually accidentally and to a body part.
Jag glömde ta med vantarna och förfrös mina händer.
I forgot to bring my gloves, and my hands suffered frostbite.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Although the second sense is transitive, it is not typically used in the passive voice because of difficulties with conjugation; for example, the past tense passive would be the awkward *förfröses.
