- The ulcerative type of dermal leishmaniasis, with secondary manifestations in the nose and mouth, occurring in parts of South America.

[edit]Probably from Latin spongia (“sponge”). Doublet of esponja. Compare Galician espulla (“wart; growth in cows”), also Romanian spânz (“horse disease”).
