eskertu

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Basque

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From esker (gratitude) +‎ -tu.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /es̺kertu/, [e̞s̺.ke̞r.t̪u]

Verb

[edit]

eskertu du/dio (imperfect participle eskertzen, future participle eskertuko, short form esker, verbal noun eskertze)

  1. to thank
    Synonym: eskerrak eman

Usage notes

[edit]

When used in the sense "to thank someone", it takes dio verbs with a dummy direct object. This is probably due to the influence of some Spanish speakers using le as a direct object pronoun.
