From Proto-Albanian *aiwesyā (Jokl L.-k. U. 34), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂óyu (“vital energy, vitality”). Cognate to Ancient Greek αἰές (aiés, “always”), Latin aevus (“eternity, age, time”) and Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐍅𐍃 (aiws, “time, eternity, world”).
