Inherited from Vulgar Latin *excadescere, derived ultimately from Latin cadere (fall). Compare Portuguese esquecer.

Perhaps from descaecer (id.) with a substitution of prefix.

Old Spanish had another escaecer which meant "forget" and was cognate to the Asturian word above, as well as to the Portuguese esquecer, also meaning "to forget".
