[edit]Etymology
[edit]A word coined in 1963, from the present tense stem es- of the verb būt + -ība, as a better formed synonym of esamība.[1]
A parallel construction exists in Lithuanian but with the sense of "entity, (living) being" rather than "existence": esybė.

Noun
[edit]esība f
- being, existence (the fact of existing)
- Mira, zaļās acis samiegusi, jau pētī pulksteni, it kā nupat tikai tā esību atklājusi ― Mira, (her) green eyes sleepy, is already studying the clock, as if she had just discovered its existence
- viņu ceļi turpmāk ies līdztekus un abu esībai būs viens mērķis un viena jēga ― their paths will continue to go alongside each other, and their existence will have one single purpose and one single meaning
- taisnība un netaisnība, gods un negodīgums, pienākums pret citiem un paša esības jēga... tas viss nodarbina rakstnieci ― justice and injustice, honesty and dishonesty, duty toward others and the meaning of one's own existence... all of this interests the (female) author
