[edit]From Middle High German entlēh(e)nen, from Old High German intlēhanōn. Cognate with German entlehnen (“to borrow”), Dutch ontlenen (“to borrow, derive”). Equivalent to ent- + leene (from Proto-West Germanic *laihnijan (“to lend, loan”)).
