[edit]Borrowed from Javanese ꦲꦼꦩ꧀ꦥꦭ꧀ (empal, “slices of spiced meat fried in coconut oil”), from Old Javanese ĕmpal (“flesh, meat”). Compare to Sundanese ᮈᮙ᮪ᮕᮜ᮪ (empal).
