[edit]Inherited from Old Spanish embaraçar, from Portuguese embaraçar (literally “to tangle, to snarl”), from baraço (“twine, tether, noose”), from Arabic مَرَسَة (marasa, “rope”). See the Portuguese entry for more. The source of French embarrasser, whence English embarrass.
