1. Archaic form of elchi.
   • 1818, Review [quoting circa 1810–1816, James Morier, "A second journey through Persia to Constantinople"], The Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register for British and Foreign India, Volume 6, page 283,

     Then the minister turned to another man on the other side of him, and said, loud enough and expressly for the ambassador to hear, "did you ever see any one so charming as the Elchee; so much better than all other Elchees?"

   • 1827, John Malcolm, Sketches of Persia, John Murray, published 1845, page 229:

     The Elchee rose, and went up to the throne, on which the king was seated; and his majesty, taking up a diamond-star, began to pin it on the Elchee's coat. It was evidently the first time the royal hands had been so employed.

   • 1839, "Abstract of intelligence received from Candahar on the 11th December, 1837", John Hobhouse, Indian Papers: Correspondence relating to Affghanistan, Issue 6, page 5,

     They brought information that another Persian Elchee was coming, and delivered a letter to Moolla Nussoo. He told me that was not a Persian embassy, but an Elchee from the Russian Government, or from the Russian Ambassador of Tehran.
