[edit]From earlier dutsaq, equivalent to tut- (“to catch, capture, arrest”) + -saq. The pronunciation of tutmaq with an initial /d-/ was commonplace up until ca. the XVIIIth century (and still occurs dialectally). Cognate with Turkish tutsak (<Ottoman Turkish طوتساق).
