[edit]From Middle English dusshen, duschen, perhaps from Old English dwǣsċan (“to put out, extinguish, destroy”) (see Middle English adweschen). Cognate with Middle Low German duschen, German dialectal duschen (“to beat, butt”). Compare also West Frisian dúste (“to push, thrust, poke”).
